Special districts provide essential services to millions of Californians every day. It’s time for you to tell your story. The Capitol, the media, and most importantly, the community you serve should understand the difference your special district makes. Join us this month as we take action together!

Some may argue that only a small percentage of people still get their news through local television outlets, radio, and newspapers. Although traditional news media is diminishing and in many cases struggling to survive, it is still an important voice in your community.

Traditional news viewers, listeners, and readers tend to be highly engaged residents, including those who make policy decisions at both the local and state levels. Don’t ignore familiar news outlets – they continue to speak to some of your most important target audiences.

A well-crafted letter to the editor is an easy, effective way to share the important role your special district plays in your community, as well as your views on key issues.

Check out our Take Action Toolkit for sample Letters to the Editor on a variety of timely topics such as:

  • Why Are Special Districts “Special?”
  • Special Districts Are Local Service Specialists
  • The Most Local of Local Governments
  • Special Districts Continue to Do More with Less
  • Special District Infrastructure Is Key to Meeting Our Climate Challenge
  • Special Districts Are Infrastructure Experts
  • Special Districts Serve California’s Most Vulnerable Communities
  • Who Should Determine Your Essential Service Providers?

Visit the toolkit on our website, download these templates, personalize them, and send one to your local paper.

Don’t forget about social media! When your letter to the editor runs, be sure to share it on your social media channels to maximize exposure.
