August 31 marks the final deadline for passing bills in the 2025-2026 California State Legislative Session. Governor Gavin Newsom will then have until the end of September to sign or veto any legislation arriving on his desk. These final weeks and hours often include frantic action on some of the biggest and hottest public policy questions of the year, with the impending deadline serving as the mother of invention. Moreover, with nearly 100 State Legislators standing for election in November, difficult votes begin to carry with them added weight from outside campaign scrutiny.

To make sure your district is ready to respond to a CSDA Call to Action in the fast-moving legislative environment, make sure your district has adopted a Legislative Advocacy Policy, governing the process your agency must go through to register your support or opposition to an issue that significantly impacts special districts.
