The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District said on Wednesday that it is implementing seating limits on its buses and encouraging riders to wear masks to keep people safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

AC Transit, which serves parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, already had implemented social-distancing standards that called for passengers to use the rear doors of its buses to keep the drivers safe. The bus agency said its new policy of minimizing the number of passengers on buses will remain in place until further notice.

Assuring the region’s most vulnerable residents are protected from the threat posed by COVID-19 is a top priority for officials responding to a global pandemic. Peninsula Health Care District and Peninsula Family Services officials are also seeking volunteers who can call to connect and check on seniors living in care facilities who may be feeling isolated. One such group is the roughly 7,600 living in the county’s senior care homes or skilled nursing facilities, who comprise the most vulnerable to the threat posed by the coronavirus. County officials are working with medical professionals to assure there is adequate staffing, supplies and care programs in those facilities, and working with personnel to assure they are properly trained to meet specialized needs.

Officials at the Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District are asking preserve users to leave their bikes and horses at home during the pandemic to keep the preserves as safe as possible. Midpen issued the ban April 2. “This is because an increase in medical calls in the preserves, particularly for bicycle accidents, was requiring increased use of limited and valuable emergency resources including rangers, firefighters and paramedics,” said Midpen spokeswoman Leigh Ann Gessner.
