At a meeting on April 28, the Port San Luis Harbor Commission voted 4-1 to allow the implementation of a fishermen's market pilot program. Solano conservation district offers online education material

The Solano Resource Conservation District on May 6 will launch its “Watershed Wednesdays” online education program and will provide free material to teachers and caregivers for use in their online school lessons. The material features district educators exploring “nature as they shelter at home, virtual classroom visits, worksheets and links to other meaningful activities,” the district announced in a statement. Fortunately, nature is around us no matter where we are, so we are highlighting that in our distance learning program and encouraging students to still be nature scientists at home,” Allison Martin, Solano Resource Conservation District Education Program manager, said.

Yucaipa Valley Water District serves safe and clean water

With the growing concerns regarding all aspects of life with the coronavirus pandemic infiltrating our lives, General Manager Joseph B. Zoba of the Yucaipa Valley Water District assures the public that its drinking water is safe and has all the safety guards in place to keep it that way. “In light of rising public concern over the coronaviruses disease 2019 (COVID-19), the drinking water supplied by the Yucaipa Valley Water District is clean, safe, and reliable,” states Zoba in his Director Memorandum 20-060 notice.

Starting May 8, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District will be reopening its open space areas in San Mateo County on weekends, according to district spokesperson Leigh Ann Gessner. The district closed its open spaces on weekends starting April 11 at the direction of the county health department.

At a meeting on April 28, the Port San Luis Harbor Commission voted 4-1 to allow the implementation of a fishermen's market pilot program on Harford Pier, inside the building soon to be vacated by the Olde Port Fish and Seafood Company. The program, according to Harbor Manager Andrea Lueker, would give the Central Coast's commercial fisherman an opportunity to sell directly to customers in a new way, while also offering a chance to find out if a more permanent market could be possible.

Ballot measure would increase Lake Shastina Fire Department funding

At its April 15 meeting, the Lake Shastina Community Services District passed a resolution to place a measure on the Nov. 3 General Election ballot to increase the special tax assessment dedicated to funding the Lake Shastina Fire Department by $3.33 each month per parcel. The rate is currently $40 per year for improved parcels and $25 annually for unimproved parcels. The measure would need to be passed by 2/3 of Lake Shastina’s voters. The fire department has operated under the same budget for 29 years, said Karla Chandler, chairperson of the Fire Investment Recovery Effort, or F.I.R.E., which supports the measure.
