A full-length article in CalMatters recently highlighted the innovative work California’s special districts are leading to ensure a safe, reliable, and sustainable water supply for future generations. In addition to mentioning Santa Clara Valley Water and Orange County Water District, the article highlights the partnership between Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, which were recently featured in this video by CSDA.

For over half a century, California has been at the forefront of water conservation efforts, utilizing recycled water to replenish groundwater basins. Building on this, steps were taken in 2010 and 2013 when the State Legislature passed SB 918 and SB 322. These bills tasked the Department of Public Health with exploring the viability of establishing consistent water recycling standards. Additionally, expert panels were convened to provide insights into public health considerations and scientific aspects related to this exploration.

California continues its commitment to pioneering water solutions continues. The state Water Resources Control Board has unveiled a framework that could potentially introduce direct potable reuse water into the state’s drinking water supply.

For those who wish learn more, a link to the Pure Water Southern California Project is provided. Those in smaller, rural communities may also find this CSDA-produced video featuring Rosamond Community Services District of value, as it demonstrates the cost-effective solution one district found for achieving 100 percent recycled water.
