Parks and Recreation Services Grants Application Due Dates Coming

Reminder: Upcoming Grant Application Due Dates

The California Department of Parks and Recreation’s Office of Grants and Local Services (OGALS) is reminding applicants of the upcoming application due dates for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Program (LWCF), Habitat Conservation Fund (HCF), and Recreational Trails Program (RTP).


LWCF: Applications Due June 1, 2023 before 5:00pm

The LWCF provides funding for Acquisition or Development projects for outdoor recreation opportunities. From urban to rural, neighborhood and city parks, to regional open space areas for outdoor recreation - all are eligible. 

Who is Eligible to Apply? Cities, counties, federally-recognized tribes, joint powers authorities (JPA) where all members are public agencies, non-state agency recreation and park districts, and special districts with authority to acquire, operate, and maintain public park and recreation areas.

Applicants applying for a development project must own the land in fee simple. For acquisition projects, the applicant must become the landowner through the acquisition. 

How Much Funding is Available? Approximately $30 million 

Maximum Grant Amount: $5 million (a minimum 50% match is required)

HCF: Applications Due June 15, 2023 before 5:00pm

The HCF provides funds for nature interpretation programs to bring urban residents into park and wildlife areas, protection of various plant and animal species, and acquisition and development of wildlife corridors and trails.

Who is Eligible to Apply? Cities, counties, eligible districts (see definition of districts in the HCF application guide).

How Much Funding is Available? Approximately $6.68 million 

Maximum Grant Amount: $2 million (a minimum 50% match is required). Less funding was requested than was made available in 2022, so we highly encourage applicants to consider applying. In this 2023 round, grant requests up to $2 million per application are welcome.

RTP: Applications Due June 15, 2023 before 5:00pm

The RTP provides funds to acquire or develop land for non-motorized recreational trails and trail-related facilities.  

Who is Eligible to Apply? Cities, counties, districts, state agencies, federal agencies, non-profit organizations with management responsibilities of public lands. 

How Much Funding is Available: Approximately $6.7 million 

Maximum Grant Amount: $2 million (minimum 12% match is required)

How to Apply: Enter Application in Submittable before 5:00pm - June 15th.
