Next Week is Special Districts Week

2020_Special_Districts_Week.jpgIn February of this year, Assembly Member Randy Voepel (R-Santee) introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 179, a measure that recognizes May 17 to 24 as Special Districts Week. Special districts are encouraged to promote Special Districts Week to their communities as a means of raising awareness and understanding of their service providers and the ability to civically engage in the local democratic process.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Californians have become more aware of the special district workers who are risking their own health and safety to provide essential services to the communities they call home.

In these tumultuous times, districts are going even further - whether it’s distributing 100,000 masks to medical personnel or delivering prescriptions and groceries to senior citizens, these public servants are doing all they can to meet the specific needs of their communities.

This year, Special Districts Week will coincide with CSDA’s Special Districts Legislative Days, where special districts can interact and exchange ideas with Capitol leaders on priority issues affecting their communities. Due to COVID-19, CSDA has transitioned this year’s two-day conference to a virtual event.

Special Districts Week is an opportunity for local communities to recognize the unsung heroes within their special districts and become more engaged with their communities. There’s still time for districts to be prepared and spur involvement from members of their communities, even though in-person events won’t be possible this year.
