Last week, subscribers to CSDA Advocacy News heard it first when Governor Gavin Newsom announced California’s efforts towards reducing the risk of wildfires through fast-tracking 13 vegetation management projects due to federal budget cuts. Subscribers also received word from the National Special Districts Association about a recent letter from U.S. Senators and the International Association of Fire Fighters regarding the impacts of private equity roll-ups of fire truck manufacturers, and the adverse impact of this consolidation on public safety.

Governor's Press Release Regarding California Wildfire Mitigation

Posted to Advocacy News May 31, 2025

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced California's efforts towards reducing the risk of wildfires through fast-tracking 13 vegetation management projects due to federal budget cuts in addition to CAL FIRE awarding $72 million to large-scale projects conducive to forest restoration and resilience, along with promoting carbon storage long-term.

All "Approved Projects" can be viewed in detail on the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA), California Natural Resources Agency, and CAL FIRE joint website. Each project cleared through fast-tracking will assist in dead tree removal, optimizing new fuel breaks, vegetation maintenance on roadways, prescribed fires, and more.

The following special districts were mentioned in 2 of the 13 projects that will work cooperatively with other state and local entities.

  • Tasmam Koyom-Baccala Dixie Post-Fire Restoration Project
    • Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District
  • Vedanta Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project
    • North Tahoe Fire Protection District
    • Tahoe Resource Conservation District

The Forest Health Grant Program, established by CAL FIRE, will award twelve grantees among state, local, tribal, federal, and private lands for addressing California's needs for wildfire mitigation.  Awarded projects will be aimed towards wildfire resiliency, protecting watershed, conservation of habitat and endangered species, fire-scarred or drought-impacted forest recovery, etc. The grant program is largely funded through the Timber Regulation and Forest Restoration Fund (TRFRF) and California Climate Investments (CCI).
