Paid Sick Leave for All Employees Signed Into Law

By Dillon Gibbons posted 09-10-2020 03:27 PM

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Budget Trailer Bill AB 1867, related to paid sick leave and paid family leave. The broad scoped bill covers several different industries as well as a number of different types of leave. Included in the provisions of the bill is a section that will impact many public employers regarding paid sick leave for persons employed as certain types of health care providers, and emergency responders, all of whom were excluded from the paid sick leave provisions of the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act. The leave included in AB 1867 applies to all California employees and provides 80-hours of paid sick leave just as the federal legislation had. In the announcement of the bill signing the Governor stated “[h]elping employees stay home when they are sick is foundational in our response to COVID-19. This bill fills in gaps in our federal and state paid sick days policy and gives our extraordinary employees a little more peace of mind as they take time to care for themselves and protect those around them from COVID-19. I look forward to continuing to work with the Legislature and other partners to make more progress in this space.”
