Today marks the start of a new two-year legislative session for the California State Legislature. Both the State Senate and State Assembly will meet at noon to swear-in new and returning legislators, establish the rules of their respective houses, and introduce legislation for the 2019-2020 session.
The Senate will swear-in 20 members today, nine of whom are new to the Senate. Following the November election, Democrats now have a supermajority in the Senate with 29 members to the 11 Republican members. Meanwhile, there will be eight new members in the State Assembly, where Democrats built on their existing supermajority in November and now hold 60 seats to the 20 Republican seats. Additionally, following the loss of five seats and the previous Assembly Republican leader’s announced run for an open Senate seat, Assembly Republicans elected Marie Waldron of Escondido as the new Assembly Republican Leader.
Throughout the week, CSDA will post updates regarding any legislation that may have an effect on special districts introduced at today’s organizational session.
