In 2017, the Little Hoover Commission (Commission) issued a report with 20 recommendations intended to improve special district oversight and transparency. CSDA has worked diligently to address these recommendations and now, together with the Institute of Local Government (ILG), is preparing a response to Recommendation 11 related to raising awareness of local governing boards. To properly respond, ILG is asking for your help.
Specifically, Recommendation 11 by the Commission states: “The California Special Districts Association, working with experts in public outreach and engagement, should develop best practices for independent special district outreach to the public on opportunities to serve on boards.”
In answer to Recommendation 11, and in support of special districts, cities, and counties, ILG is preparing a tip-sheet for local agencies about existing best practices in outreach to secure candidates for local elections, and they need your input to do it.
ILG is asking for your help in answering a few brief questions about your local practices. You can answer any or all questions that you wish to provide answers to. As a perk, you can also see the responses in progress.
If you would like to share any of your materials used for outreach or have questions about this request please email rstephens@ca-ilg.org (Subject: Best Practices for Elected Official Candidate Recruitment) or call 916-658-8207.
ILG has also reached out to our colleagues with cities and counties and ten city representatives have already filled out the survey, so take the survey now to see the results.
