FEMA has opened the application period for the Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) for the Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) grant program and the new Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) pre-disaster mitigation grant programs.

"FEMA’s two competitive mitigation grant programs provide states, local communities, tribes and territories (SLTTs) funding for eligible mitigation activities to strengthen our nation’s ability to build a culture of preparedness by reducing disaster losses and protecting life and property from future disaster damages."

The Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) FMA and BRIC NOFOs can be accessed at Grants.gov or here on fema.gov. FEMA encourages reviewing the NOFOs before applying, as it provides detailed program information and other grant application and administration requirements.

Special districts are eligible sub-applicants for HMA.  However, to be eligible a district must:
1. Be an approved participant in a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan;
2. Have an approved plan of their own; or,
3. If not part of a Hazard Mitigation Plan, be sponsored by a local government agency those does have an approved plan.

Application Funding

  • $160 million available in funding for FMA
  • $500 million for BRIC.
How to Apply
Eligible applicants must apply for funding using the new FEMA Grants Outcome (FEMA GO), which is now the management system for FMA and BRIC.
