Hundreds of local agencies, along with many more private businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals are eligible to claim money currently held by the California State Controller’s Office. CSDA encourages special districts to take advantage of the Controller’s easy-to-use unclaimed property webpage to see if you are on the list and reclaim these precious resources.
The magnitude of unclaimed property currently overseen by the state stands at an approximate $13 billion, encompassing a variety of assets such as bank accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, insurance benefits, wages, and safe deposit box contents, except for real estate holdings.
On February 1, the fourth annual observance of National Unclaimed Property Day took place, marking a significant initiative aimed at reuniting Californians with their lost or forgotten assets. State Controller Malia M. Cohen underscored the importance of citizens proactively engaging in the retrieval process by utilizing the resources available at claimit.ca.gov.
There is no imposed deadline or fee associated with the recovery of unclaimed property once it has been transferred to the State Controller’s Office. Interested individuals can conduct targeted searches based on individual names, district names, and district types.
All claims will be processed in the order of their submission, with the State Controller’s Office committing to a thorough and timely evaluation, acknowledgment of receipt, and approval of claims for subsequent payment.
