The Nevada Irrigation District (NID) Board of Directors supported a declaration for surplus water, during an April 8 teleconference with President Ricki Heck, Vice President Chris Bierwagen, and Directors Scott Miller, Nick Wilcox and Laura Peters all present. Each year, prior to the start of irrigation season that begins in mid-April, Directors review forecasted water supply conditions to consider a surplus water declaration for the upcoming summer months. Directors also took action by reinstating their April 22 Board Meeting and opting to hold the meeting, along with their May 13 Board Meeting, via video conference. The video conference format allows the Board to meet, respect social distancing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while also allowing the public to participate and provide public comment.

The San Mateo County Harbor District announced on March 23 the restrooms at both Pillar Point Harbor and Oyster Point Marina were closed to the public. A few days later, it went further and prohibited all off-the-dock fish sales and access to Johnson Pier. Officials said having people walk the pier was too risky and did not meet the requirement to encourage social distancing. “Currently members of the public cannot go onto the docks to purchase fish,” General Manager Jim Pruett said. “Because the dock cannot be maintained, it’s too difficult for staff to facilitate escorting people on and off the pier.”

The district launched the event within its “Fun at Home” campaign, calling all local families to participate on Facebook by posting photos of their driveway decor with hashtags such as #HesperiaChalkYourWalk. “With all the program cancellations and facility closures, along with the ‘shelter at home’ order statewide, we here at the Hesperia Recreation and Park District want to make sure you still have access to plenty of things to do to keep your mind and body active and having FUN,” a post on the district website says. In lieu of the district’s traditional egg hunts, “Chalk Your Walk” serves as a “virtual Easter Egg Hunt,” with many local chalk artists doodling Easter eggs of all sizes and colors.
