A slate of bills regarding PFAS chemicals in consumer products is making its way through the Legislature with support from CSDA and a number of other organizations. PFAS is a family of chemicals used in a variety of products. PFAS can eventually end up in water supplies. CSDA members that provide water and wastewater treatment services have been rightly concerned about the potential impact of these contaminants on their systems, particularly since treatment can be very costly.

Two source control measures that help prevent PFAS from entering the water supply in the first place are currently being considered in the Legislature. AB 1817 (Ting) would prohibit the sale of any textile articles containing PFAS beginning January 1, 2025. To increase disclosure and public awareness of products containing PFAS, AB 2247 (Bloom) would require, by July 1, 2025, manufacturers to register products that contain intentionally added PFAS on a publicly accessible reporting platform. CSDA’s Legislative Committee took a position of Support 3 on all three measures and CSDA advocacy staff has advocated accordingly through letters to the authors and / or policy committees, participation in coalitions, and through providing committee testimony as needed. These bills have all passed out of the Assembly and are currently under consideration in the Senate.

In other PFAS-related news, the U.S. EPA announced four new health advisories for PFAS-family chemicals earlier this month. The National Special Districts Coalition, of which CSDA is a founding member, provided more details about this announcement in this blog post.
