California Chief Justice Issues Statewide Order Suspending Trials

By Mustafa Hessabi posted 03-24-2020 01:26 PM

On March 23, the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court Hon. Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye issued a statewide order to Courts suspending all jury trials for a period of sixty (60) days from the date of the order. Given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recommended social distancing measures, the order states that "[c]ourts cannot comply with these health restrictions and continue to operate as they have in the past... Many court facilities in California are ill-equipped to effectively allow the social distancing and other public health requirements required to protect people involved in court proceedings and prevent the further spread of COVID-19."

The order applies to all criminal and civil trials, although Courts may conduct a trial at an earlier time where good cause is shown or through the use of remote technology, where appropriate. You can find a copy of the order HERE
