Moments ago, Governor Gavin Newsom completed a briefing to Californians via Facebook Live. Asked if California would “re-open” in April, Governor Newsom responded, “We clearly, based upon the curve, have a lot more work to do. We are trying to bend that curve, but we have not bent it.  Early April would be misleading. Based on all of the experts, the next six to eight weeks will be pivotal and determinative in terms of making adjustments and resetting expectations.” He then reiterated his previous suggestion that at least eight to twelve weeks may be necessary, but that time will tell.

Governor Newsom also shared updates on the following:

  • California experienced a tragic loss of a teenager in Lancaster, CA due to COVID-19. The state is doing an investigation to understand more. While the acuity and hospitalization rate may skew older, 50 percent of the 2,102 individuals testing positive are between the age of 18-49. Individuals 50-64 years of age represent 26 percent, while those over 65 make up 23 percent.

  • Sir Richard Branson of Virgin, joining Tim Cook and Elon Musk to work on addressing the COVID-19 challenge.

  • Elon Musk came through on a promise to deliver over 1,000 ventilators. California just got another 1,010 through additional efforts.  Working with Bloom Energy to refurbish other existing ventilators.  California has brought 3,000 new ventilators online thus far.

  • Working with ag community and those warehousing food to ensure a safe and reliable food supply. A protocol is shifting from choice to quantity.  Grocers are now hiring to help meet the demands, which could help with California’s growing unemployment numbers.

  • COVID-19 testing has significantly increase across country and inside the State of California. Those numbers will be released tomorrow.

  • The Governor will be talking tomorrow about economic issues, mortgage issues, and foreclosure issues. Will also discuss details regarding the percentage of recovery from infections.
