In this District’s Weekly Press: The Port San Luis Harbor District is considering extending a discount on rent aimed at helping businesses in the area stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Calaveras Resource Conservation District received $81,100 to remove woody fuels along important access roads that aren’t managed by the county or state. The Valley Center Fire Protection District Board is pondering a measure for the November ballot asking voters to tax themselves to give the district a sound financial foundation.

The Port San Luis Harbor District is considering extending a discount on rent aimed at helping businesses in the area stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic. But as of now, only two businesses stand to benefit from the extension. Several Port San Luis businesses that participated in the Lessee Recovery Program saw revenues largely return to 2019 levels in May and June, despite significant losses across the board in March and April.

Video Contest Encourages Student Civic Engagement

 

The California Special Districts Association is challenging all high school and college students to be creative this summer by participating in a statewide video contest aimed at promoting civic engagement among California’s youth. The Districts Make the Difference Video Contest is part of a public outreach campaign to highlight the important work of the more than 2,000 special districts in California. Students are asked to submit a short video (90 seconds or less) that educates the public on the essential services provided by these districts to their own communities.

The Calaveras Resource Conservation District received $81,100 to remove woody fuels along important access roads that aren’t managed by the county or state in two privately owned homeowners association subdivisions between Mokelumne Hill and San Andreas. Pacific Gas and Electric Co. recently donated $346,100 for projects to protect communities in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties from the threat of wildfire. The donations were part of $2.3 million that the nation’s largest utility gave for similar projects in 28 California counties.

Poll numbers show support for fire tax increase measure

The Valley Center Fire Protection District Board is pondering a measure for the November ballot asking voters to tax themselves to give the district a sound financial foundation. The board will vote August 4 on a 6 cent tax per square foot of residential structures, that would generate about $900,000 annually.
