In this District’s Weekly Press: Leaders in fire-scarred Paradise say Gov. Gavin Newsom is stifling their chance of rebuilding their town by reneging on an agreement to provide the local water agency with state bailout funds this year. A Pure Water Monterey expansion proposal has narrowly survived another attempt to shelve it indefinitely even as the main recycled water project struggles with operational and cost issues that have further postponed its water delivery date and hampered its capacity. Olivenhain Municipal Water District’s sewer customers were originally expected to see a three percent increase in their sewer bills effective July 1, 2020 but rather than increasing sewer rates at this time, OMWD will continue to contain their costs.

Leaders in fire-scarred Paradise say Gov. Gavin Newsom is stifling their chance of rebuilding their town by reneging on an agreement to provide the local water agency with state bailout funds this year. Faced with a major budget shortfall from the coronavirus economic shutdown, Newsom has proposed eliminating a previously planned $7.4 million the state was to give the Paradise Irrigation District this year to maintain its operations while it worked to restore the water system in the Butte County hill town.

OMWD’s sewer customers were originally expected to see a three percent increase in their sewer bills effective July 1, 2020. The board approved in 2016 a sewer rate study that would see rates rise over a five-year period, of which the fiscal year beginning on July 1 represents the fifth year. “Our board is concerned about the financial impacts to customers due to COVID-19,” said OMWD Board President Ed Sprague. “Rather than increasing sewer rates at this time, we will continue to do whatever we can to contain our own costs.” OMWD will reprioritize capital needs and delay noncritical projects in Fiscal Year 2021. While operating costs and capital needs outside of OMWD’s control continue to grow each year, OMWD continues its commitment to long-term financial stability and excellent customer service.

Pure Water Monterey expansion remains afloat

A Pure Water Monterey expansion proposal has narrowly survived another attempt to shelve it indefinitely even as the main recycled water project struggles with operational and cost issues that have further postponed its water delivery date and hampered its capacity. For the second time in a month, the Monterey One Water board rejected a bid to formally deny certification of the expansion proposal’s supplemental environmental impact report and postpone further work on the proposal until “feasibility” is proved.
