Dutch scientists were able to find the coronavirus in a city’s wastewater before Covid-19 cases were reported, demonstrating a novel early warning system for the pneumonia-causing disease. Although it’s unlikely that sewage will become an important route of transmission, the pathogen’s increasing circulation in communities will increase the amount of it flowing into sewer systems.

In a familiar call by park districts across the Bay Area, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District urged the public to follow current health directives to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The park district said cooperation from the public will help it keep trails and preserves open. When taking part in outdoor activities, people are asked to maintain at least six feet from others not sharing a household. Park officials asked people to shelter at home except when enganged in essential activites including outdoor exercise.

The shortage of toilet paper is causing some residents to utilize other wiping substances and, when toilets are flushed with some of those alternatives, local sewer lines are impacted. "The primary issue we have when people do that is backups in the sewer," Jack Bebee, general manager of Fallbrook Public Utility District, said.
