A $100,000 grant provided by Desert Healthcare District to Desert Women for Equality (DWE) has helped the organization achieve the milestone of 2,000 free mammograms for women in the Coachella Valley. The "We Care" Free Mammogram Program completed 80 exams on April 22, 2010, which brought the organization's total mammograms provided to 2,000 in the communities of Desert Hot Springs, Thousand Palms, Palm Springs,Cathedral City, and Palm Desert. DWE completed an additional 186 mammogram screenings in May and June 2010. "The District board was pleased to learn of this landmark achievement in the 'We Care' program," said Glen Grayman, MD, Board President of Desert Healthcare District. "Breast cancer is a major threat to women's health, and it's critical that our local population be screened regularly. Many District residents can't afford the screenings, which is why the District continues to support Desert Women for Equality's program." The "We Care" free mammography clinics are held monthly at various locations in cities throughout the Coachella Valley. To date more than 2,000 women have been screened. It is estimated that the "We Care" program will have screened an additional 700 women by year's end. "Our "We Care" clinics assure free life-saving mammograms for the Coachella Valley's uninsured and underinsured women," said Barbara Barrett, founder of the 100% volunteer-based "We Care" Free Mobile Mammography Program and President of Desert Women for Equality. "In late April, we reached our 2,000th screening, and we were so thrilled I bought a dozen roses for our client to celebrate. With the ongoing economic downturn and continued support from the District, I expect we'll be providing free screenings for local women for a long time to come as we are seeing an increase of approximately 30 percent each year." A complete schedule of the remaining "We Care" clinics for 2010 can be found on the Desert Women for Equality web site at www.desertwomenforequality.com or by calling (760)325-4701 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays for specific dates and to schedule an appointment In order to register, women must be forty years of age or older, without implants and have not had a mammogram for over one year. Appointment openings are available at upcoming clinics. Desert Healthcare District is a government agency, established by the state of California in 1948, to improve and support community health programs within a 457-square mile service area in the Coachella Valley.
